24/96 is the highest sample rate available to accompany video right now.
The sampling rate of a CD is 44,100 (44khz) samples per second. Each sample is broken up into 16 bits.
Sounds good, right?
What about your DVD collection? It's 44khz too.
Or your growing HD DVD / Blu-Ray Disc collection?
Almost TWICE as good. The audio on all of those is delivered at a sample rate of 96khz (96,000hz)! And each sample is broken up into 24 bits. Wow! High Definition Video AND Audio!
Just like better video has more pixels, better audio has a higher sample rate. 96k is nothing new and it's not hard to record at 96k, the question has always been "what to do with it?".
Typically, CD's just don't have the room to hold all that info. DVD's don't really either. But everything else coming down the pike from this moment on...WILL.
So, as you get ready for your next project, think about how it will be delivered. DVD? HD? Blu-Ray? If you will be delivering on any of those, you owe it to yourself and your project to send out your audio at 96k.
It may get compressed along the way, but you'll feel better and your audio will end up sounding much better - if it at least begins as a 96k file.
Good luck with your projects!
